Counselor's Corner

Dear families,

Queridas familias,

Welcome back! 2025 has kicked off with a chill, but we are getting creative to stay warm and dry. January’s character trait of Perseverance will certainly come in handy as we brave the cold. One way to think about Perseverance is “pushing yourself through challenges and obstacles.” We all experience challenges in our lives. We all have moments when we feel like we can’t do it or that we want to give up on a big task. It is important to develop tools that help us work through those challenges in order to grow in those moments instead of giving up. Perseverance is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Strong. Our next Breakfast of Champions, on January 31st at 9am, will celebrate a student from each class that has persevered this month.

Having completed our classroom lessons on Bullying, “hurtful, repeated behavior that involves an imbalance of power,” we will continue lessons on Acceptance and Equity, then move on to topics about Career and Self-Awareness. If you have suggestions for additional topics you would like to see, please reach out and I will do what I can to work with teachers to fit those in.

Notes for 5th grade families:

  • This semester, we will be forming a Student Council. 5th grade students will be invited to apply with a letter and recommendation from their teacher. The Council will provide opportunities to practice leadership and teamwork, and will coordinate activities for No Place for Hate, a national anti-bullying campaign from the Anti-Defamation League.

  • Middle School:

    • Wooten has partnered with several middle schools as options, but your child might be a great fit for another school. Please read the middle school newsletter carefully to see what options are available for middle school, and ask your child if they would like to apply to any specialty magnet programs.

    • Applications are due February 4th at the very latest, but preference is often given to students who apply sooner.

    • If you have any questions regarding the transition to middle school, contact me and I will be happy to work with you!

    • Events:

      • Yesterday, Jan 9th, Burnet Middle School (if you are zoned for Wooten, you are zoned for Burnet) came to Wooten to present an overview of the middle school routine and Burnet’s programs.

      • Today, Jan 10th, Ann Richards School came to Wooten assist interested girls in writing their application letters.

      • Wednesday, Jan 15th, Burnet Middle School will host a field trip to tour the school and view presentations from their programs.

      • Thursday, Jan 16th, Ann Richards School will return to Wooten help with application letters.
